1.Who we are

LanternPass (“LanternPass”, “we”, “us”, “our”) operates this website and the related directory services. We act as the data controller for personal information we collect about visitors, registered users, and self-listers. Contact details are in Section 12.

2.What we collect

We collect personal information in three ways:

a) Information you give us. When you create an account or submit a self-listing, we collect what you enter (for example, email, display name, listing photos, descriptions, contact handles, measurements and service areas). Accounts do not require an email address. An anonymous account still has an account identifier and can be linked to device analytics. You can use a passkey or an email sign-in code; we do not use account passwords. Passkey registration stores credential information, not your device’s biometric data. We also store the text you send through LanternPass chat and replies received from listing contacts, including photos and stickers.

b) Information we collect automatically. When you use the Service we automatically collect technical information about your device and visit. This includes IP address, approximate geolocation (derived from IP via our content-delivery provider), browser type and version, device type, operating system, referring URL, pages viewed, contact-button interactions, and the date/time of access. First-party analytics records can be linked to a session, account and device identifier. Outside Safari and iPhone and iPad browsers, we use browser fingerprinting to recognise returning passkey devices and exclude operator traffic from analytics. If you allow browser location access, the map and nearby-results features can use your precise location. We use cookies and similar technologies as described in Section 8.

c) Information from third parties. We collect public listing information. Published profiles may also contain operator-entered values, values extracted from listing text, and automated estimates or inferences. We receive messages from listing contacts through connected messaging channels, currently LINE and Telegram. Those channels also process the communications under their own privacy policies. A chat may reach a venue or agency contact rather than the individual shown on a profile.

3.Chat and external contact links

LanternPass chat runs through our systems. We store message text, delivery information and received media so you can read the conversation and we can operate and troubleshoot messaging. Received chat photos are stored privately and served through authenticated routes. Authorised operators can access transcripts for support and operations. An automated system run on Cloudflare reads a listing's message beside your latest message to set aside promotions and announcements the listing sends to all its followers, so they do not appear in your chat as replies; operators can still see them.

You can send a chat message without an account. While a chat is open in a browser with no account, Cloudflare Turnstile checks, invisibly, that its messages come from a person rather than an automated program; Cloudflare processes information about your browser and device for that check as its Turnstile Privacy Addendum describes. A browser the check cannot clear is asked to sign in with a passkey instead. A cookie then keeps a guest pass on your browser for up to 180 days, so your chats are there when you come back. Anyone who uses that browser can read its guest chats while the pass lasts. When someone logs in on that browser, by a sign-in started there, its guest chats join that account. On a shared browser, clearing this site's cookies, or chatting in a private window, keeps your guest chats from the next person: it ends that browser's access but does not erase stored messages.

External contact links open the listing’s own website or app. Communications made there are governed by that service’s privacy policy. We do not access your contact list or camera roll; uploading a listing photo sends us the file you choose. We do not process payments for listed services or ask for full payment card details.

4.How we use your information

We use personal information only for the purposes set out below:

  • To operate and personalise the Service — showing nearby results, remembering your saved listings, and powering search.
  • To moderate, verify, and publish self-listings, and to communicate with you about the status of your submission.
  • To authenticate accounts, keep them secure, and prevent fraud or abuse.
  • To process optional paid features.
  • To comply with legal obligations and to respond to lawful requests by public authorities.
  • To send sign-in codes, account or listing notices, and listing-change alerts you opt into. We do not send unsolicited marketing. This email policy is separate from messages you send and receive through LanternPass chat.
  • To understand usage and improve the Service through page-view records, interaction records, heatmaps and session recordings. These records are not all anonymous or aggregate; signed-in activity can be associated with your account.

5.Legal bases (for EEA / UK visitors)

Where the EU/UK GDPR applies, our legal bases for processing are: (a) performance of our agreement with you (operating your account and listing), (b) our legitimate interests in running, securing, and improving the directory, (c) compliance with legal obligations, and (d) your consent where we explicitly ask for it. You may withdraw consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing carried out before withdrawal.

6.Sharing and disclosure

We share personal information only as described below:

  • Public directory content. Published listing information may come from submissions, public sources, or the processing described in Section 2, and moderators may edit it. Your account email and login details are not public.
  • Service providers. We use trusted vendors for hosting, content delivery, image storage, email delivery, error logging and analytics. This includes Cloudflare and Microsoft Clarity. We also route chat messages to the listing’s contact through the connected messaging service.
  • Legal and safety. We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or government request, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of LanternPass, our users, or the public, including to prevent fraud, harassment, or human trafficking.
  • Corporate transactions. If LanternPass is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction; we will notify you and any new controller will be bound by terms no less protective than this notice.

We never sell personal information. We never share what you searched for, who you contacted, or which listings you saved with any third party for advertising or monetisation.

7.How long we keep your information

Chat messages and received media are currently retained indefinitely. Clear chat hides earlier messages from your view; removing a chat hides its entry and unread count until you explicitly reopen it. Neither action erases stored messages or media. Account, listing and analytics records do not all have an automatic deletion schedule. To request access or deletion, contact us under Section 12; applicable rights and legal retention obligations still apply.

8.Cookies and similar technologies

We use a small number of cookies and similar tracking technologies. We group them as follows:

  • Strictly necessary. Required for the site to function — for example to keep you signed in, keep a guest chat on this browser, remember that this browser has signed in before so it is offered sign-in rather than a new account, remember your age-gate acknowledgement, and protect against abuse (including Cloudflare Turnstile's checks on directory listings and on a guest's chat messages). These cannot be turned off.
  • Preferences. Remember the city, filters, and presentation choices you select.
  • Analytics. Help us understand how the directory is used. Our own analytics stores page and interaction records with session, device and, when available, account identifiers. Microsoft Clarity provides heatmaps and session recordings. While you are signed in, we send Clarity your account's random ID as an account identifier, and your email address (or, if your account has none, "Anonymous" and the first six characters of that ID) as the name it shows us. While you are not, we send it the random ID our own analytics keeps for your browser instead, named "Visitor" and the first six characters of that ID. Clarity uses cookies and similar identifiers; its processing is described in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

You can control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking all cookies may break sign-in and saved preferences.

9.International transfers

LanternPass operates globally. Personal information may be processed in countries other than the one in which you reside, including countries that may not provide the same level of data-protection as your home jurisdiction. Where required, we put appropriate safeguards in place (such as standard contractual clauses) before transferring personal information internationally.

10.Security

We use HTTPS and access controls, including authentication for private chat photos. No internet-based service can be guaranteed entirely secure. Keep your sign-in codes and passkeys private, protect access to your device and email, and notify us if you suspect your account has been compromised.

To keep the directory from being copied in bulk by automated programs, Cloudflare Turnstile checks, invisibly, a browser that asks for the directory's listings (on the home page and the search pages) without a current pass; Cloudflare processes information about your browser and device for that check as its Turnstile Privacy Addendum describes. The pass then lasts up to 7 days, in two cookies (the pass and when it ends). A browser the check cannot clear can still browse the listings, a page at a time, and is checked again later.

11.Your rights

Subject to applicable law, you have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Correct inaccurate or incomplete information.
  • Delete your account, your listing, and associated personal information.
  • Restrict or object to certain processing, including any direct marketing.
  • Receive a portable copy of the information you have provided.
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 12. We may ask for reasonable verification before acting on a request, particularly where it concerns deletion of a published listing.

12.Contact us

For privacy questions, requests, or complaints, write to lantern@lanternpass.com. We aim to respond within 30 days of a verified request.

13.Changes to this notice

We may update this notice from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. The “Last updated” date at the top will reflect the most recent revision. We encourage you to review this page periodically.
