Smile Bar はアオナンの Central Point の中にある。クラビのムアン、ネオンの灯る一角で、ビーチの昼が暖かい夜へとゆっくりほどけていく場所だ。紫の Cairo Nights の看板と、黄色い光に照らされた階段の下で、ハイスツールが長い共用テーブルに沿って並び、砂が冷めたあとここに流れ着く旅行者と地元の人が気軽に混ざり合って広場を満たす。 中の雰囲気は茶目っ気があって急がない。青く塗ったレンガの壁にはヴィンテージのカクテル用ブリキ看板が重ねて掛かり、黒板はフィッシュ・アンド・チップスとミートパイからパナーン、タイのグリーンカレーへと入れ替わる。Chang と生ビールは手の届くところにある。厨房を出る皿は、テーブルの上の皿と同じに見える。つやのあるエビがピーマンと青ねぎに絡み、あるいは焼きそばの山にライムと唐辛子ひとつまみ。 昼、周囲の通りは波板屋根の下のオープンエアのフードコートのように感じられる。暗くなると、もう一杯残ってしまうような場所に変わる。明かりが柔らかく、人の集まりがゆるく、誰も帰りを急がないからだ。インコールで、押し付けが少なく、紛れもなくアオナン。
