Adam's Apple Clubは、チェンマイ旧市街の堀の北、チャンプアックのウィアンブア通りに面している。スクーターがまだ路肩を占め、夜がバンコクのスクンビットの通り筋よりゆっくり進む一帯だ。 通りに立てば、ざらついた灰色の上階の下に白い古典柱の列柱廊、ファサードをなでるヤシの葉、光沢のあるロゴ入りの赤いAdam’s Appleの看板、そして一言読む前にここだと分かる屋上のリンゴのシルエットが目に入る。入口は道路に向かって開いている——段にスクーター、縦長のバナー、ソイの迷路はない——暑さが落ち、明かりが点くころに歩いて寄るインコールのクラブハウスだ。 チャンプアックは日が落ちたあと、入り混じった人を引き寄せる。ナイトバザールを一巡してきた旅行者、長期滞在の外国人、北部のゆるいペースを好むタイの地元の人。建物がすでに放っている通りの勢いを目当てに来ればいい——大胆な看板、開いた列柱廊、閉ざされた扉ではなくクラブとしての存在——そして屋根のリンゴを目印にする。
